How to Stack Objects & Climb On Them - Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 allows players to stack objects on to one another and climb them to reach isolated places. Like a lot of the game’s mechanics, it isn’t something they spell out for you. If you aren’t familiar with these types of games, it is very possible to do an entire play through without ever stacking crates or objects, and thus miss out on all that sweet loot. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen.

How to Move Objects

This is one of the gameplay mechanics where using a mouse and keyboard (M&K) is vastly superior. While using M&K, you can simply click and drag objects with , and put them where you want them – as long as your character is close to the object (1). On a controller it takes much longer; every time you want to move something, you’ll have to first hover over it and hit , then select move, and finally place it where you like (2).

What Objects Stack?

The shape of crates makes them the best choice by far for stacking. Not only that, but the game allows you to ‘climb on’ them as a special action when you select them with or . However, sometimes you won’t have many crates available where you need them. These are the times when you need to be more creative. Barrels make good bases, but try to refrain from using them as the top of the structure because you can’t ‘climb on’ barrels like you can crates. That said, anything you can move could potentially be used to stack.

Can’t Climb? Jump

If you don’t have an easy route for your character to climb on the crates (you’ll need to stack them like steps for climbing), you’ll get an error saying ‘Can’t get there'(1). Luckily, all characters come equipped with a handy vertical leap called the jump action. Just jump on top of the structure, then jump up to the desired area.

When to Stack and Climb

It is usually pretty obvious where this will come in handy; you might see a chest up on a landing, with no clear way up to it. Sometimes it isn’t as obvious, however — Baldur’s Gate 3 is riddled with secrets, and you should always keep an eye out for landings or areas you can reach by stacking and jumping. As you progress in the game (and depending on your squad), you will get spells that can whisk you away to these areas. Generally speaking, though, you will want to save those spell uses for combat and other situations, so this stacking technique will still be useful.
