Dung Eater

Game: Elden Ring

A depraved serial killer, Dung Eater’s late-game quest has some solid rewards and can unlock an alternate ending.

While Dung-Eater might lack in morality, his quest is worth completing in any playthrough. It unlocks the powerful Omen armor set, as well as either an alternate ending or a summonable Dung Eater puppet. Both conclusions end in his demise. Progressing his quest also sees him become both a summon for Mohg, the Omen (the version under Leyndell) and an invader, and rewards the player with the Sword of Milos.

How to Complete Dung Eater’s Quest (Blessing of Despair Ending)

After accessing the Altus Plateau for the first time, Dung Eater will arrive in the Roundtable Hold as a non-hostile invader. Until you have a Seedbed Curse, he will want nothing to do with you. After you acquire one, however, he will take interest in you, and give you the Sewer-Gaol Key, which you can use to free his actual body from his cell.

There are 5 Seedbed Curses you can find in the world to trigger this step, but the two in Leyndell Royal Capital are the easiest to get.

  • There is a tower near the entrance of Leyndell Royal Capital. You can find the Seedbed Curse on a corpse after climbing the stairs and ladder up to the top level.
  • In the alternate version of the Roundtable Hold located upstairs from the castle proper, there is a corpse with a Seedbed Curse in the room that mirrors the Dung Eater’s room in the actual Roundtable Hold.

WARNING: Both of the Seedbed Curses in Leyndell, Royal Capital must be acquired before you defeat Maliketh in Crumbling Farum Azula. After defeating Maliketh, Leyndell becomes the Ashen Capital. Because you need five of the possible six Seedbed Curses in order to complete Dung Eater’s quest, this is a potential point of failure if you want to unlock the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse and its alternate ending at the end of Dung Eater’s quest.

WARNING: If you want to complete Blackguard Big Boggart’s questline in order to get an additional Seedbed Curse, making the rest of Dung Eater’s quest easier, you will need to do so before doing this step.

Dung Eater’s cell can be found in the Subterranean Shunning-Ground by dropping down the sewer grate near two omens, just to the left of the Underground Roadside Site of Grace. Once you have the Sewer-Gaol Key, go here and release him, then exhaust his dialog.

Return to the Roundtable Hold and go to the Dung Eater’s room. He has left a message about fighting him in Leyndell’s Outer Moat.

Go to the moat outside Leyndell (the same location where Blackguard Big Boggart sets up his prawn shop at the end of his quest). If Boggart is here, speak to him about something lurking nearby, and then reload the area. When you do, Boggart will be injured, and speaking to him will trigger Dung Eater to invade. If Boggart is not here, then Dung Eater will simply invade when you enter the moat and get near the body tied to a chair.

Defeat Dung Eater here in order to obtain the Sword of Milos and unlock Dung Eater as a summon for Mohg, the Omen. As well, if Blackguard Big Boggart was in the moat, then he will now be dead, and you can loot a Seedbed Curse from his corpse, allowing you to skip one later.

After defeating Dung Eater, he will return to the Roundtable Hold. Speak to him here, and he will ask the player to give him more Seedbed Curses in order to “defile” himself and create a “cursed ring”. After this, his real body will be tied to a chair in his Sewer-Gaol cell, and you can choose to either turn him into a puppet using Seluvis’s Potion, or give him Seedbed Curses in order to obtain the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse.

WARNING: In order to complete Dung Eater’s quest in this manner, you must do this before you give Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade as part of her questline, and before you give Seluvis’s Potion to either Gideon Ofnir or Nepheli Loux.

WARNING: Completing Dung Eater’s quest in this way will prevent you from giving him the Seedbed Curses required for 6B, and thus prevent you from acquiring the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse ending.

The simpler conclusion to Dung Eater’s quest, and the one that doesn’t enable him to enact his vile will, is to use Seluvis’s Potion to turn Dung Eater into a puppet, instead of giving him the Seedbed Curses he demands.

In order to do so, Seluvis must still be alive (meaning this step must be done before giving Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade as part of her questline), and you must have received his potion from him, without giving it to either Nepheli Loux or Gideon Ofnir.

If you approach Dung Eater in his cell and give him the potion, he will perish, becoming the Dung Eater Puppet available for purchase from Seluvis. Wait a moment or two after giving him the potion, until his dialog finishes, and then kill him in the chair in order to also acquire the Omen armor set.

WARNING: Both of the Seedbed Curses in Leyndell, Royal Capital must be acquired before you defeat Maliketh in Crumbling Farum Azula. After defeating Maliketh, Leyndell becomes the Ashen Capital. Because you need five of the possible six Seedbed Curses in order to complete Dung Eater’s quest, this is a potential point of failure for it.

If you want to complete Dung Eater’s quest by following his direction to give him more Seedbed Curses, then you must gather five of the six available Seedbed Curses and give them to Dung Eater in his chair. The Seedbed Curses can be found at the following locations:

  • If Blackguard Big Boggart was in the moat when Dung Eater invaded, and thus was killed by Dung Eater, then he will have dropped a Seedbed Curse when he died. There is no way to acquire this Curse if Boggart’s quest was not completed before releasing Dung Eater.
  • In Leyndell Royal Capital: There is a tower near the entrance of the city. You can find the Seedbed Curse on a corpse after climbing the stairs and ladder up to the top level. This is one of the easiest and quickest Seedbed Curses to get.
  • In Leyndell Royal Capital: In the alternate version of the Roundtable Hold located upstairs from the castle proper, there is a corpse with a Seedbed Curse in the room that mirrors the Dung Eater’s room in the actual Roundtable Hold.
  • In Volcano Manor: After clearing the Temple of Eiglay, go to the teleporter leading to Rykard (but DO NOT use it), then turn around, go back in the building, and through a Stonesword Key fog door. You will find a Seedbed Curse on the corpse in this room, guarded by enemies.
  • In Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree: The corpse with the Seedbed Curse will be on a balcony overlooking a Putrid Avatar, ballista, and two Cleanrot Knights. It can be accessed by hopping on an arch near when you can acquire Cleanrot Knight Finlay’s Ashes.
  • In Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree: Going from the Prayer Room Site of Grace, continue going down stairs until you get to the room with two Cleanrot Knights. From here, drop down to the right and turn around. The Seedbed Curse will be on a corpse in a dark room directly in front of you.

Once you have acquired 5 Seedbed Curses, return to Dung Eater in his cell and give them to him. He will die, dropping the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse (which is required for the Blessing of Despair ending). Reloading the area will also reward you with his extremely-sturdy Omen armor set.
