The Imperial City will evoke feelings of nostalgia in The Elder Scrolls Online.
The first Elder Scrolls Online game expansion will arrive soon. Imperial City DLC is launching August 31 for PC/Mac, and in the middle of September for Xbox One and PS4. There’ll be lots to do in this highly anticipated expansion. Along with the introduction of the new Tel Var Stones in-game currency, there promises to be engaging content for PvE and PvP players alike.
Beyond the content itself, the Imperial City promises to offer a sense of nostalgia for fans of The Elder Scrolls gaming franchise. In an article posted yesterday on the official Elder Scrolls Online website, the devs gave some insight into the creation of a reimagined Tamrielic capital city.
In some respects, the devs had an easy go at things. Gaming fans first encounter the Imperial City in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion after all, so the basic layout and design already exist. That being said, the devs needed to reimagine the city darkly.
The capital city in ESO’s Second Era is familiar, yet different than Oblivion’s. The world of The Elder Scrolls Online is one of chaos. Not only are the three factions waging war with each other, Molag Bal’s Worm Cult have taken control of the streets. Death, destruction, and decay are the norm — a far different visual look and feel than the peaceful serenity conveyed in Oblivion.
In so many ways, the Imperial City seems like coming home again, but it’s like walking into a nightmare. To give Elder Scrolls fans a sense of the Imperial City’s decay and damnation, familiar landmarks such as the Arboretum’s central pagoda (the home of Emperor Tiber Septim’s statute in Oblivion) have been reshaped into ruinous structures. The pagoda itself is now the site of a massive book burning by Molag Bal’s forces.
Elder Scrolls Online players will be immersed in a familiar yet different world in Imperial City. To get a feel for the nightmarish world depicted in the upcoming DLC, take a look at the following video.
