No witch or wizard is complete without their robe and wizard hat, and this is doubly true in Hogwarts Legacy. If you’re to survive and succeed in combat, you’ll need all the help you can get, and the right gear can be the difference between life and death. In this guide, we’ll explain how gear works, how to identify unknown magical traits of gear, and list all the gear present in the game.
Like in most RPGs, gear in Hogwarts Legacy serves to enhance your character’s stats. By default, gear offers one primary Offense or Defense stat. However, you can add and then improve a secondary stat to a piece of gear, or apply Traits, by using the Loom. Gear can be modified to be more effective against specific enemies, and improved to offer more Offense or Defense.
Of course, also like in most RPGs, gear is also about looking cool, but Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t force you to pick between the stats and the look: the game has a Transmog system, where you can assign a different look to the piece you have equipped. No looking like you dressed yourself from grandma’s closet just because the pink jumper you found has the best defense stats!
Equip the gear item first, then hover over it in your inventory. You will see the option to Change Appearance ( / / ), which will bring up an Appearance menu for that piece of gear. You will be able to pick from your Collections (typically rewards from quests or challenges) or all other options (unlocked from the new gear you find).
In order to equip gear, you’ll need to open the Options menu, then navigate to the Character tab. Once there, you’ll be able to see your character’s current equipment, as well as your stats of Health, Defense, and Offense. You can also see your current character level, plus how many Galleons you have. Next, to equip a piece of gear, select one of the equipment slots, and then press the equip button ( /). You’ll then be able to see all the gear you have available for that slot.
Some gear that you find will have unidentified magical traits. To gain their benefits, you’ll need to first identify them. This can be done in the Room of Requirement (unlocked by The Room of Requirement Quest), at the Identification Station. If you don’t have any gear that needs to be identified, the table will let you know, as in the image below.
Gear upgrades can be applied at the Loom, which is found in the Room of Requirement (unlocked by The Room of Requirement Quest). Using the Loom, you can apply Traits and Upgrades, both of which can make your gear more effective. Traits add specific benefits to your gear, like making it specifically stronger against Trolls or Dark Wizards, while Upgrades are improvements to the gear in general, adding to either Defense or Offense stats. It appears that each item, or perhaps each item type, will improve only your Defense or Offense stat when upgraded.
Keep in mind that the rarity of an item is what determines its Trait Slot Level, with Superb gear having Trait Slot Level I, Extraordinary gear having Trait Slot Level II, and Legendary gear having Trait Slot Level III. Well-Appointed gear cannot be upgraded, and so has no Trait Slot Levels.
In order to upgrade your gear, you’ll need to care for animals in the Vivarium, and collect fur, feathers, and other materials from them. While you’ll be able to use common materials for most initial upgrades, subsequent upgrades will require rarer materials. Here are the upgrade and trait materials you can use to upgrade your gear in Hogwarts Legacy:
Fwooper Feather
Jobberknowll Feather
Puffskin Fur
Mooncalf Fur
Niffler Fur
Mangled Fur
Toad Warts
Dugbog Tongue
Leech Juice
