inXile entertainment launches a new Kickstarter campaign to fund The Bard’s Tale IV.
Good news for all you retro RPG fans. Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the cult classic The Bard’s Tale video game. If that wasn’t reason enough to celebrate, Brian Fargo, the game’s creator, announced the launch of a new Kickstarter campaign to fund the making of The Bard’s Tale IV.

Brian Fargo’s company, inXile entertainment, hopes to raise $1.25 million on Kickstarter to fund the creation of The Bard’s Tale IV. If the Kickstarter is successfully funded, the company will pledge at least an additional $1.25 million to ensure a sufficient budget to create an epic game.
This isn’t the first Kickstarter campaign started by inXile — the gaming company previously used crowd source funding to make the award winning RPG Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera. As of today, The Bard’s Tale IV has already raised over $872,000 with 37 days yet to go in the campaign.
In an email sent to prospective backers, Fargo writes:
The original game has a special place in my heart and fans have shown me time and again they still love the dungeon crawl genre and want more. With your help, I can finally make this long-awaited true sequel to the original The Bard’s Tale trilogy, bringing you that sense of discovery with challenging dungeons and devious puzzles that you loved and cursed all at once.
According to Kickstarter, The Bard’s Tale IV will be “a single-player, party-based dungeon crawl, rich in exploration and combat” and will feature “dynamic phase-based combat, where the pace of battle is animated and fluid, but still gives you time to think and respond to your enemies.” The Bard’s Tale IV will be built using Unreal Engine 4 — the same development tools used to make Fable Legends and Kingdom Hearts III.

Backers who support the game within 48 hours of the campaign will receive a free copy of either Wasteland 2, The Witcher, or The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings. This special offer ends June 4 at 6AM PST.
